• Opening Night at Miracle League Field Tonight

    Opening night for the inaugural season at the Betty and Bobby Allison Miracle League Ball Field is tonight, Monday, April 16, 6 p.m. at Dan Kinney Park, 2701 S.Blackman Rd., Springfield. A second game takes place at 7 p.m.

    The first youth league game of the season takes place Monday, with the first adult league games following on Thursday, April 19, 6 and 7 p.m.

  • Cardinals 2012 Season Underway Tonight

    The Springfield Cardinals will make their 2012 regular season debut tonight at 7:08 p.m. against the Frisco RoughRiders at Hammons Field and fans are encouraged to arrive early to take part in the Opening Day Festivities.

    Springfield will be rolling out the red carpet tonight as legendary Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan will be on hand to throw out the first pitch. The first 5,000 fans will receive a Great Southern Cardinals magnet schedule/picture frames and it will also be the first of nine Johnsonville “Buck a Brat” Thursday Nights ($1 Johnsonville Bratwurst every Thursday Home Game). Opening Night will be capped off by an AM Pyrotechnics Fireworks extravaganza.

  • Springfield Welcomes National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championships

    NCHSBC 2012The 21st Annual National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championship is March 19-24 at gymnasiums throughout Springfield, Republic and Ozark.

    The tournament planner is projecting 345 teams from more than 30 states to participate in the tournament. More than 3,200 boys and girls in ten age divisions will compete.

    Planners expect 8,000 to 10,000 people to be in the city for the event.

    The Convention & Visitors Bureau estimates out-of-town participants and spectators will spend about $3.65 million in the city.

    Opening ceremonies, the All-American games, 3-point contest and slam dunk contests begin at 6 p.m. March 21 at Hammons Student Center. The championship games begin at 12:30 p.m. March 24 at Hammons Student Center. Four championship games are scheduled.

    Spectators are welcome. All games are free admission.

    This marks the fourth year the tournament has taken place in Springfield.

  • Springfield Welcomes ATA Tournament

    The Springfield Sports Commission is proud to welcome the American Taekwondo Association Region 115 Championship.

    Senior Master Prosser will be hosting the Downtown Springfield Regional Tournament February 25, 2012 in Springfield Missouri. The tournament will be hosted at the Springfield Expo Center located at 635 E Saint Louis St Springfield, MO 65806-2413.

    The official hotel for the tournament is the University Plaza Hotel, located just across the street from the convention center at 333 John Q. Hammons Parkway Springfield, MO 65806. ATA rates are available, so please remember to mention ATA when booking your rooms.

    For students in Region 115, all registration will be handled through your instructor. For visitors outside the region, online registration is available. See the website for more details.

    St. John’s Health System, now Mercy, received the John Q. Hammons Founders Award at the 2012 Missouri Sports Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony. We are proud to work with St. John’s Health System and appreciate their support as platinum level sponsors!

    Dear Members:

    It has been a pleasure meeting and working with you.  I appreciate your support of the Springfield Sports Commission and of sports in Springfield. Thank you for investing in this organization and in your community!  I have enjoyed working with you and representing the Springfield Sports Commission at many sporting and charity events.

    I have decided to resign from my position as assistant director and return to the field of health care and patient relations.  My last day with the Springfield Sports Commission will be February 15, 2012.
